San José Clinic In the News 2015

Long-Time Volunteer Named City-Wide Finalist for Community Quarterback Award

December 13, 2015 - Congratulations to San José Clinic volunteer Dr. Efrain Garcia, one of only five city-wide finalists for the 2015 Community Quarterback Award from BHP Billiton and the Houston Texans! The Clinic nominated Dr. Garcia, who is also our December 2015 Volunteer of the Month, for this prestigious award because of his exceptional dedication and service to San José Clinic.

In his many years of service, he has provided more than 7,500 patient visits to over 2,000 patients, volunteering thousands of hours. Dr. Garcia also served on the Board of Directors, and was instrumental in the Clinic’s current FTCA medical malpractice coverage. Being able to offer malpractice coverage to volunteer providers at no cost has had a huge impact on the Clinic since its implementation, greatly aiding in our recruitment of volunteer providers.

Monday, December 14, 2015 was Dr. Garcia’s last day at San José Clinic as he retires from his volunteering to focus on family. We wish you all the best, Dr. Garcia, and you will be greatly missed!

San José Clinic Mentorship Program Continues to Grow

September 5, 2015 - In January, eight mentees were tapped to become part of a new mentorship program at San José Clinic. These individuals, chosen based on their emerging leadership within the Clinic, were paired with mentors from the current leadership team.

For the past nine months, the mentees and mentors of the new San José Clinic mentorship program have met individually and as a larger group to develop professional skills of all kinds. With their mentors, participants have worked to determine and develop their leadership style, including examining real-world challenges and triumphs.

On September 3, mentees Sandy Alvarez, Denise Delgado, Lydia Dobbs, Balbina Martinez, Nieves McClellan, Donna Nisenson, and Israel Reyes took their mentorships on the road for specialized training at The Cowboy Solution in Montgomery. This unique organization uses horses to teach participants how to build powerful partnerships based on trust.

At the Cowboy Solution, the participants learned more about good communication, essential roles of leaders, and creating strong partnerships. “The mentorship retreat was a great experience! We spent the day learning how to be better leaders and teammates,” shared Donna Nisenson, one of the mentees. “Through working with the horses we learned the importance of building trust in the workplace.”

Thank you to Cowboy Solutions for their generosity in making this retreat possible! It was an innovative way to increase the scope of San José Clinic mentorship program, which was designed to fulfill a part of the Clinic’s strategic plan by providing both staff development and succession planning. We look forward to seeing how this program continues to grow in the coming months.
